Convert an Italian size to a French size
The Italian rule for womenswear is the simplest of all: drop two notches, which is four points of numbering. An Italian 42 is a French 38, a 44 is a 40. It holds across the whole grid.
For menswear and shoes, however, Italy uses the same numbering as France. An Italian 46 is a French 46, and so is a size 42 shoe.

These are standard grading equivalents, not guarantees. Two brands from the same country cut differently.
The catch
The gap applies to womenswear only. Using it on a man's jacket or on a shoe size puts you two notches out, in the wrong direction: Italy uses the same numbering as France there.
