Convert a UK size to a European size

UK sizing runs in even numbers from 4 to 20. It steps by two like the French scale, but starts far lower: a UK 10 is a French 38, a UK 12 a French 40.

For shoes the gap is not constant. A UK shoe size has no whole-number European equivalent, hence the half sizes in the chart.

The catch

Watch for British retailers that also sell in Ireland and Australia: all three markets use close but not identical shoe numbering.
