Convert a Japanese size to a European size

Japan grades womenswear in odd numbers: 7, 9, 11, 13. A Japanese 11 is a French 38. For menswear, letters double rather than stack: LL instead of XL, 3L instead of XXL.

Shoes are the easy part: they are given in centimetres of foot length. A Japanese 25 is a European 39, and measuring your foot settles it.

These are standard grading equivalents, not guarantees. Two brands from the same country cut differently.

The catch

Japanese brands generally cut narrow through the hips and short in the sleeve. On a structured garment, the conversion gives the right line but not always the right comfort.
